The Lord Lyon of Scotland's visit to the United States. Lord Lyon

On October 14, The Lord Lyon, Robin Orr Blair, CVO of Edinburgh visited The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.
He spoke on the position of heraldry and genealogy in Scotland today. The title of his speech was An Ancient Office in a Modern Setting the Position of the Lord Lyon in Contemporary Scotland.

This was the first visit ever to the United States for a Lord Lyon. His lecture was co-sponsored by the College of Arms Foundation and the New York Caledonian Club.
Ed Cattell, Jr. President of Clan Campbell Society of North America and Trustee James R. Campbell were on hand to personally greet and welcome him.

CCSNA 30th Anniversary Annual General Meeting CCSNA 30th Anniversary AGM

A River in Time was the theme of the 30th anniversary annual general meeting (AGM) at the Embassy Suites hotel, Charleston, SC September 18-21, 2003. The AGM was held in conjunction with the Charleston Scottish Games and Highland Gathering.
President Edward Cattell reported on the badge presentation to His Grace, Torquhil Campbell, MacCailen Mor at Inveraray Castle

AGM 2004 will be held in Anchorage, Alaska, June 24-26, 2004
AGM 2005 - Minneapolis, MN
AGM 2006 - Halifax, Canada
CCSNA Website will be upgraded and on line October 1, 2003

The Executive Council approved a proposal to restructure and create two regions in Canada to expand membership services.

Awards and HonorsAwards and Honors

Clansman of the Year Award was presented to Randy Seale for outstanding membership service, information management, and cost savings from electronic voting, and many other innovations.

Commissioner of the Year was presented to Ann Jackson for outstanding achievements in Region Four.

President’s Award was presented to Clyde Bill Campbell, former president, for extraordinary service and commitment to the Society.

Upcoming Events of Special Interest in October

The 2003 Fall Season has begun and Campbells in the tri-state area are involved in many activities. There are several events of special interest that should be added to the social calendar:

Capercaille Concert with Karen Matheson at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway, New York City at 8:00 pm on Saturday, October 4. One performance only. Sir Sean Connery has said, Karen Matheson has a throat surely touched by God! The band has toured 30 countries, release eight award-winning albums and appeared in the film Rob Roy.

Scottish Heritage FestivalNew Jersey Scottish Heritage Festival

PNC NJ Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ. Sunday, October 5. Heather Campbell Smith, New Jersey Commissioner, and husband Larry will host the Campbell tent and welcome cousins and friends from all over. This is the last of the Games for the year and always fun.

Annual Garden Reception, July 23

The New York Caledonian Club, the American Scottish Foundation, and the societies of St. David and St. George extend an invitation to gather on the close of the General Theological Seminary, 175 Ninth Avenue at West 21st Street in Manhattan at 6 p.m. on July 23, 2003.
This annual event is one of the best attended of the year and brings together Brits and those of British ancestry.

Campbell DNA Project

The Family Tree DNA Project has been established and may provide a new way to establish Campbell connections. Kevin Campbell, Campbell DNA Project Coordinator, announced the establishment of the DNA Project with Family Tree (July 5, 2003). A match can only be established among those registered and in the pool (database). As more people register, the greater the potential for identifying family connections.
This new tool could have a major impact in genealogy research. Additional information can be obtained from their Website at http://www.waltier.com/dna.htm
This project is not sponsored by Clan Campbell or the Clan Campbell Society (NA) but may be of genealogical interest.


Long Island Scottish Games Long Island

43rd Long Island Scottish Games, August 23

Clan MacDuff will host the 43rd Long Island Scottish Games on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Old Westbury Gardens, Old Westbury, NY from 8 AM to 5 PM. Official opening ceremonies is at 12:30 PM. Admission to the grounds: Adults $10, senior citizens $8, and children $5.00.

CCSNA Annual General Meeting Dates

The 2003 Annual General meeting will be held September 18-20 in Charleston, South Carolina. The next issue of the Journal will provide complete details on registration and travel.
In 2004, the AGM will be held in Anchorage, Alaska and on to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2005.
As an additional reminder, all members are invited and encouraged to attend the annual general meetings to learn about the work of Clan Campbell Society throughout North America.

The Executive Council held its mid-year meeting at the Sailport Resort on Tampa Bay, Florida March 14-16, 2003.

The Executive Council unanimously approved a resolution to support the observance of Tartan Day across North America.
Campbells and their friends are encouraged to participate in Tartan Day observance and wear their tartan to demonstrate support of Scottish cultural heritage.
A special invitation was extended from Trustee James R. Campbell to march in the national Tartan Day Parade in New York City on Saturday, April 5, 2003. Check this website for latest information about events leading up to the parade and post-parade celebrations. You may also email Trustee@campbellsnyc.org for further information.

Tartan Day Celebration in Mobile on Sunday, April 6, 2003 Oakleigh House

The Tartan Day Celebration in Mobile on Sunday, April 6, 2003 will be co-hosted by the Scottish Society of Mobile and the Historical Mobile Preservation Society on the grounds of the Oakleigh House.
The celebration will be held in honor of the late Renee Ellis, director of the Office of Special Events for the City of Mobile, who had wanted a Celtic Festival for the Mobile Tricentinenal. She was always a great supporter of the Scottish Society of Mobile by having us do many civic functions. She was a wonderful lady and will be greatly missed.
Tickets for the Tartan Day are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The Historical Society will be serving tea all afternoon, and there will be plenty of entertainment. Sweet Prospect from Pensacola will be there entertaining. There will also be Clan Tents, pipers, fiddlers, childrens games.
